CA Truckers Fuel Price Complaint Halts Freight
LCG, Apr. 30, 2004--Several hundred independent truckers around Stockton, Calif., have refused to deliver shipments since Wednesday, because, they say, the high price of specially formulated diesel fuel makes them uncompetitive with truckers from out-of-state who are able to buy cheaper fuel. The stoppage has caused the Union Pacific Corp. railyard in nearby French Camp to place an embargo that has prevented rail shipments from piling up at the yard. Besides refusing to deliver shipments from the UP yard, truckers are also demanding that they receive higher shipping rates before they will make deliveries from Burlington Northern Santa Fe yards near Stockton. The price of diesel in California has risen by 18 per cent in April, to over $2.30 per gallon. So far, no shortages of goods have arisen due to the standoff, although that is a possibility should other sites be affected by similar actions. The Sacramento Bee reported that John Bromley of UP had heard that Oakland, Long Beach, Los Angeles and Commerce could experience either protests or stoppages. Trucking firms are not raising rates and cannot, the spokeswoman for the California Trucking Association, Stephanie Williams, said at a legislative hearing. At the same time, some truckers from outside the state have made shipments to make up for the stoppages.Supplies of diesel fuel in the state are being monitored for impending shortages. A plan to allocate diesel fuel was reviewed by the California Energy Commission, although Commissioner James Boyd has said that such a plan is not about to be put in place. If allocation of diesel fuel took place, it would be the first time in the state's history.
