Quebec Approves New Gas-Fired Power Plant
LCG, July 6, 2004--The Quebec government approved the province's first major gas-fired generating facility, the Becancour cogeneration plant, which is scheduled to commence operations in 2007. The plant, located roughly midway between Montreal and Quebec City, is deemed necessary to meet Quebec's forecast electricity demands. Calgary-based TransCanada Corp. is contracted to build the Becancour plant, estimated to cost $500 million, for Hydro-Quebec.A decision to approve another gas-fired plant Suroit will be delayed, likely into 2005, due to protests and opposition from environmentalists and locals. Historically Quebec has relied almost entirely upon hydro electricity to meet its energy requirements, with surplus electricity to export as well.
