LCG, June 23, 2025--The Governor of New York today directed the New York Power Authority (NYPA) to develop and construct an advanced nuclear power plant in upstate New York to deliver zero-emission power that supports a reliable and affordable electric grid. NYPA will lead the effort to develop at least one new nuclear energy facility with a combined capacity of at least one gigawatt (GW) of electricity, either alone or in partnership with private entities. The directive builds on the Governor’s 2025 State of the State to develop nuclear energy plans in New York.

Springfield Citizens Vote Down New Power Plant
LCG, August 4, 2004--In an unusual set-back for a municipal power provider, voters in Springfield, Missouri yesterday voted down a new, coal-fired power plant proposed by City Utilities of Springfield (CU). The 300-MW plant was estimated to cost $578.5 million and was proposed to meet Springfield's growing demands for power, which CU officials forecast will exceed CU's supplies by 2007 or 2008.The vote was 19,587 for and 21,073 against the plant, with all Greene County precincts reporting. Voters were deciding whether to accept a 16 percent electric rate increase spread over four years to help pay for the new, Southwest 2 plant. Door-to-door campaigning was heavy, with labor union members and the Springfield Area Chamber of Commerce supporting the plant. Opponents of the proposed plant included Rate Payers for Affordable Utilities, who questioned the need. CU was not allowed to campaign directly.With the proposed plant rejected, CU will need to develop a new plan acceptable to its citizens to serve the growing power demands of the area.
