New Power Plant Planned for North Carolina

LCG, August 11, 2004--A new power plant is planned in North Carolina to meet the peaking requirements of the North Carolina Electric Membership Corp. (NCEMC). According to NCEMC, there are sites under consideration in Person, Anson, Wake and Richmond Counties. The power plant proposed for Person County would be a 340 MW, gas-fired facility designed to serve the state's electric cooperatives.

The plant is estimated to cost $150 million and would include six units operating in a simple cycle mode, with low-sulfur fuel oil as a back-up. The plant would help meet both the summer and winter peak loads of the cooperatives. Construction would start in late 2005 or early 2006, with operations targeted to commence in 2007.
