FPL's West County Energy Center Clears Hurdle

LCG, February 8, 2006--Florida Power & Light Company (FPL) yesterday announced that its West County Energy Center proposal was selected as the energy supply to meet the growing power needs of FPL customers. The project, estimated to cost $1.2 billion, was determined to be the best alternative following a competitive bidding process established by the Florida Public Service Commission (FPSC).

The West County Energy Center proposal is to construct a gas-fired, combined cycle plant located in western Palm Beach County. The proposed plant consists of two, 1,200-MW units, with the first unit scheduled to be operational in 2009 and the second unit by June 2010. There is an option to build a third unit on the 220-acre site.

FPL plans to file for a Determination of Need petition with the FPSC by the end of March 2006. If the petition is approved by the FPSC, a decision may be rendered by mid-2006. The next steps identified by FPL are to seek approvals for environmental permits and a review before the Governor and the Florida Cabinet Siting Board.
