LCG, October 20, 2025--Holtec International announced today that the Palisades Nuclear Power Plant site in Michigan has received new nuclear fuel – 68 assemblies in total – that achieves a major milestone on the path to restarting the plant. The 800-MW facility was shutdown and decommissioned in 2022 due primarily for economic reasons; however, Holtec is progressing towards restarting the original unit by the end of this year, pending all necessary federal regulatory reviews and approvals. Achieving a successful restart of a shutdown nuclear unit will be a historic first for the nuclear industry.

Unistar Increases Commitment to Develop New Nuclear Reactor at Calvert Cliffs
LCG, July 31, 2007--Unistar Nuclear, a joint venture of Constellation Energy and AREVA Inc., filed with the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) the environmental report portion of a combined construction and operating license (COL) application to build a new, 1,600-MW nuclear reactor adjacent to Constellation's existing Calvert Cliffs nuclear power plant in Lusby, Maryland.
The COL application includes two key components: a safety analysis and an environmental report. NRC regulations allow for an applicant to submit one component of a COL application up to six months before the remainder is submitted to NRC. The environmental report was submitted on July 13, and the NRC's staff will conduct a public meeting on August 14 to discuss how the NRC will review the COL application for a new reactor at the Calvert Cliffs site.
Unistar Nuclear notified the NRC in May that it had selected the Calvert Cliffs site for Unistar's first COL application. The submission of an application does not create a commitment for Unistar to build a new nuclear reactor at the site.
Unistar Nuclear's application will include AREVA's 1,600-MW, U.S. Evolutionary Power Reactor (US EPR). The US EPR is based upon AREVA's 1,600-MW, European EPR that is now being deployed in Europe. One EPR reactor is currently under construction in Finland.
AREVA has completed phase one of its U.S. EPR Design Certification pre-application process with the NRC. AREVA expects that the Design Certification application will be submitted by the end of 2007 and validated by 2010, which would enable a U.S. EPR to be licensed and ready for operation as early as 2015.
