Offshore Wind Farms Planned for Texas
LCG, October 4, 2007--The Texas General Land Office (GLO) on Tuesday announced that it had awarded the first four competitively bid leases for offshore wind power in the nation's history. The leases were awarded to Wind Energy Systems Technology, LLC (W.E.S.T.). Given positive results from planned meteorological testing, W.E.S.T. could install wind farms that would generate a minimum of 250 MW to 300 MW per lease. The state hopes to collect for its Permanent School Fund over $400 million over the 30-year lease period.
The offshore wind energy tracts are located near Jefferson, Calhoun, Brazoria and Cameron counties and total 73,098 acres in size.
W.E.S.T. was the sole bidder and is currently developing a wind project eight miles off of the coast near Galveston, Texas.
