Calpine and ExxonMobil Sign CO2 Transportation and Storage Agreement for CCS Project in Texas

LCG, April 24, 2025--Exxon Mobil Corporation (ExxonMobil) announced yesterday an agreement with Calpine Corporation (Calpine) to transport and permanently store up to 2 million metric tons per annum (MTA) of CO2 from Calpine’s Baytown Energy Center, a natural gas-fired facility located near Houston, Texas. This is part of Calpine’s Baytown Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) Project that is designed to add CCS for the facility’s CO2 emissions. The Calpine facility could then provide a 24/7 supply of low-carbon electricity to the Texas grid plus steam to nearby industrial facilities.

Duke Submits COL Application for New Nuclear Power Station

LCG, December 14, 2007--Duke Energy yesterday submitted a combined construction and operating license (COL) application to the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) for the William States Lee III Nuclear Station. The new generating capacity is needed to meet Duke Energy Carolina's forecast growth in electric demands.

Unlike most plans to construct nuclear reactors in the United States, Duke proposes to build the two reactors at a greenfield site, rather than to add new capacity at an existing nuclear power station. The site is located in Cherokee County, South Carolina.

Duke selected Westinghouse Electric's AP1000 design for the William States Lee III Nuclear Station. The AP1000 design incorporates passive safety features. The NRC approved the Design Certification on December 30, 2005. The proposed two units will have a combined electric generating capacity of 2,234 MW.

Duke's COL application relies upon the COL application submitted October 31, 2007 to the NRC by the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) and NuStart Energy, a consortium of nuclear energy companies, to build two nuclear reactors at TVA's Bellefonte site in northern Alabama. Other companies that have announced the selection of the AP1000 design as the basis for additional COL applications to construct reactors include Progress Energy, Southern Company, SCANA and Santee Cooper.
