Bruce Power Files with CNSC to Build Nuclear Reactors in Alberta

LCG, March 14, 2008--The Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC) yesterday received an application from Bruce Power to prepare a site to construct as many as four nuclear reactors in northwestern Alberta. The estimated cost is over $8 billion, and the electric generating capacity would be up to 4,000 MW. The facility could be operational as early as 2017, according to Bruce Power.

Bruce Power purchased the assets of Energy Alberta Corp., which applied last August to build two reactors with a combined net generating capacity of 2,100 MW near Peace River in Alberta.

Bruce Power is a partnership among Cameco Corporation, TransCanada PipeLines, BPC Generation Infrastructure Trust, and the two main unions at the existing Bruce site, the Power Workers' Union and The Society of Energy Professionals. Bruce Power currently operates the Bruce A and Bruce B nuclear power stations, which include six active units and two, 750-MW units that are in the process of being refurbished that are located northwest of Toronto.
