DTE Selects GE Hitachi's ESBWR
LCG, June 18, 2008--Detroit Edison (DTE) selected GE Hitachi Nuclear Energy's Economic Simplified Boiling Water Reactor (ESBWR) design for a new nuclear reactor that may be constructed at DTE's existing Fermi-2 power plant site in Michigan.
DTE notified the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) that it intends to use the ESBWR in its submittal of a combined construction and operating license (COL) application this fall.
DTE has not committed to develop a new reactor; however, it is considering the opportunity and must submit an application prior to year-end to be eligible to receive federal financial incentives set forth in the Energy Policy Act of 2005.
The ESBWR design, which has a design capacity of 1,520 MW, has also been selected by Exelon, Dominion, and Entergy.
