UTC Receives Innovation Award for Geothermal Power Technology
LCG, June 20, 2008--UTC Power, a subsidiary of United Technologies Corporation, received the National Energy Resources Organization's (NERO) annual Innovation Award for its PureCycle geothermal system, which uses low-temperature geothermal energy from hot water to generate electricity.
The PureCycle system is designed for relatively small temperature differentials and uses an organic Rankine cycle-based power system with refrigerant rather than steam to generate power in a closed system that has essentially no emissions.
Since 2006, the PureCycle geothermal system has operated using a 165 degree F geothermal source at Chena Hot Springs Resort in Alaska as a U.S. Department of Energy Geothermal Technologies demonstration project. The ability to utilize low temperature differentials expands the potential locations where geothermal energy may be exploited.
NERO is a non-partisan organization whose mission is to engage in dialogue on energy issues, recognize outstanding achievements, and promote public awareness.
