LCG, February 20, 2026--The EIA today issued an "in-brief analysis" that estimates U.S. power plant developers and operators plan to complete a record installation of 86 GW of new, utility-scale electric generating capacity that is connected to the U.S. power grid in 2026. Last year, 53 GW of new capacity was added to the grid, which was the largest capacity installation in a single year since 2002. Thus the estimate of 86 GW of new capacity in 2026 is a whopping 33 GW greater than the year prior. It should be noted that over 20 GW of the 86 GW of new capacity this year is estimated to be completed in December.

Construction Starts on FPL's 10-MW Solar Project
LCG, May 29, 2009--Construction activities are now underway on the Space Coast Next Generation Solar Energy Center, located at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida. The 10-MW, solar photovoltaic (PV) power project is a public-private partnership between Florida Power & Light Company (FPL) and NASA.
The Space Coast Next Generation Solar Energy Center will employ Sunpower PV panels and SunPower Tracker technology, which moves the panels to follow the sun throughout the day and increase the solar energy converted to power. The project will use approximately 35,000 solar PV panels installed over 60 acres. The power generated will be used by FPL's customers in Florida.
In late February, FPL began construction on a similar project, the DeSoto Next Generation Solar Energy Center, that will provide 25 MW of solar PV power to FPL's customers. FPL has stated that the DeSoto project will be the largest solar PV facility in the nation when it is complete at the end of 2009.
