El Paso Electric Signs Agreement for 92-MW Solar Project in New Mexico

LCG, June 12, 2009--El Paso Electric announced yesterday that it executed a 20-year, power purchase agreement (PPA) with NRG Energy (NRG) for all of the capacity of a 92-MW, concentrating solar power (CSP) plant planned in southern New Mexico by NRG and eSolar, a manufacturer of modular, scalable solar thermal power plants.

NRG will construct the Santa Teresa solar facility and use eSolar's solar-thermal technology and engineering expertise. The solar project is scheduled to commence commercial operations in the summer of 2011. The project reflects NRG and eSolar?s recently announced plans to develop up to 500 MW of solar thermal power in the Southwest.

The Santa Teresa project will employ an array of mirrors that focus solar energy on receivers positioned on towers that are approximately 180 feet tall. Liquid contained in the receivers is heated and used to convert water into steam that drives a turbine, which in turn drives a generator.

The project site is a 450-acre tract in southwest New Mexico, approximately 10 miles from El Paso, Texas. The solar plant includes 32 mirror fields that will contain a total of approximately 390,000 tracking mirrors focused on 32 towers.

The plant will be a positive step by El Paso Electric toward meeting New Mexico's renewable portfolio standard (RPS).
