SCE Announces Agreements for 726 MW of Solar Power
LCG, June 18, 2009--Southern California Edison (SCE) announced yesterday that it executed two power purchase agreements (PPAs) with Solar Millennium for the output from two, 242-MW solar-thermal stations, with an option to double the capacity of one station.
The locations for the planned solar power stations are in southeastern California, near the towns of Blythe and Ridgecrest. The stations are scheduled to commence operations in 2013 and 2014.
Solar Millennium, LLC, Berkeley, a subsidiary of Solar Millennium, is to develop the projects that employ a parabolic trough design. Long, parabolic mirrors reflect sunlight onto a tube, where the concentrated solar energy heats a working fluid that in turn is used to create superheated steam. The steam is used in a traditional steam turbine - generator set for power production.
Solar Millennium stated that construction may begin by the end of of next year, given timely approval of permit applications and other regulatory approval.
