Arizona Dedicates First Wind Farm

LCG, October 13, 2009--Arizona's first commercial-scale wind farm, the Dry Lake Wind Power Project, was dedicated yesterday. The project, located in Navajo County, includes private, state and federal lands. About a third of the project is on the private Rocking Chair Ranch, with a third each on Arizona State Land Department and Bureau of Land Management public lands.

Iberdrola Renewables developed the 63-MW project, and Salt River Project (SRP) signed a power purchase agreement (PPA) for all of the power generated by the wind farm. The project includes 30 Suzlon S88-2.1 MW wind turbines. The site footprint covers roughly 6,000 acres, with most of the land used for cattle grazing.

U.S. Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar stated, "The partnership that built Arizona's first commercial-scale wind energy project demonstrates a common desire to reduce our dangerous dependence on foreign oil by using our domestic renewable resources to meet a larger share of our energy needs. This strategy will also help us reduce greenhouse gas emissions to address climate change, while creating 'green jobs' around the nation."
