Calpine's Otay Mesa Energy Center Delivers Power to the Grid
LCG, October 22, 2009--Calpine Corporation announced yesterday that it has successfully placed into service its Otay Mesa Energy Center, a gas-fired, combined cycle electric generating facility located near San Diego, California.
Power from the 600-MW Otay Mesa Energy Center supplies San Diego Gas & Electric (SDG&E) electricity under a 10-year tolling agreement. The agreement enables SDG&E to dispatch power from the Otay Mesa facility to serve its customers, and SDG&E provides the natural gas to fuel the facility.
The advanced facility includes GE combustion turbines and a Siemens Westinghouse steam turbine. The cooling system at the plant employs air cooling, rather than using water. The Otay Mesa Energy Center is the largest air cooled power plant in California.
