BP Solar Closes PV Manufacturing Operations in Maryland
LCG, March 31, 2010--BP Solar announced late last week that it will stop casting, wafering and cell manufacturing of silicon cells at its production facility in Frederick, Maryland. Although unit costs had been reduced nearly in half, lower market prices for solar photovoltaic cells have reduced margins.
BP Solar plans to continue to operate in the Unites States; however, solar cell production will occur through lower cost joint ventures and regional supply partners.
The CEO of BP Solar stated, "Solar prices declined between 40% and 50% since the onset of the financial and economic crisis, compressing industry margins and driving solar power towards grid competitive pricing. By shifting our supply to a high quality, low cost supply base to serve both distribution customers and large scale projects, we have strengthened our position as a provider of competitive solar solutions with our offer of the highest lifetime value."
