AES Announces Construction Complete on 1,000-MW, Solar-Plus-Storage Project in California

LCG, June 11, 2025--The AES Corporation (AES) announced today that it has completed construction of the 1,000 MW Bellefield 1 project, which is under a 15-year contract with Amazon. Bellefield is a two-phase project, with each phase including 500 MW of solar plus 500 MW of a four-hour, battery energy storage system (BESS). When Phase II is completed in 2026, the total installed capacity will be 2,000 MW, and AES expects the total project will be the largest solar-plus-storage facility in the United States.

Construction Commences on Kemper County IGCC Power Plant

LCG, December 17, 2010--Mississippi Power, a subsidiary of Southern Company, yesterday held the ground breaking ceremony for the Kemper County IGCC (Integrated Gasification Combined Cycle) Plant in Mississippi. The project is estimated cost to $2.4 billion and is scheduled to commence operations in 2014.

The 582-MW Kemper County IGCC Plant incorporates the Transport Integrated Gasification (TRIG?) technology, developed by Southern Company, KBR and the U.S. Department of Energy, to gasify local lignite resources for combustion in a combined cycle facility.

"The Kemper County IGCC plant will put to work a four billion ton reserve of lignite, an underutilized resource in Mississippi," said Ed Day, president and chief executive officer of Mississippi Power. "Mississippi lignite is the lowest cost fuel source available, and its price stability is the key to what makes the project the best option to serve our customers? growing energy demands."

The design includes carbon capture system estimated to capture 65 percent of carbon dioxide, which would make the CO2 emissions comparable to that of a natural gas combined cycle plant.

Earlier this month two other IGCC projects made headway. First, EmberClear announced that all of the necessary permits for the development and construction of the 270-MW, Good Spring IGCC Project were received by its joint venture, Future Power PA, Inc. (FPPI). The Good Spring IGCC project will be built in Northeastern Pennsylvania and will also utilize nearby coal supplies. The plant design and coal gasification process is based upon the GreenGen project in Tianjin, China.

In addition, the Illinois State House approved Tenaska's proposed Taylorville IGCC project, which will employ Siemens AG's IGCC technology to gasify Illinois coal for fuel to generate electricity in the planned 602-MW facility. Tenaska expects the coal gasification process will allow over 50 percent of the CO2 produced to be captured.
