Solar CPV Project Gains Momentum in Arizona
LCG, January 18, 2012--Salt River Project (SRP), Arizona State University (ASU) and SunPower Corp. recently announced agreements to construct a 1-MW solar concentrated photovoltaic (CPV) power plant at ASU's Polytechnic campus in Mesa, Arizona. The solar facility will be the first commercial deployment of the SunPower® C7 Tracker technology that uses parabolic mirrors to focus the sun's energy on the solar PV cells.
SunPower will engineer, install, operate and maintain the system, and SRP will purchase all of the electricity generated from SunPower under a purchase power agreement (PPA). In a separate agreement, ASU will purchase all of the energy attributable to the plant for use at its Polytechnic campus. Plant construction remains contingent on a number of factors, such as receiving all necessary permits.
The SunPower® C7 Tracker is named for its ability to concentrate the sun?s energy by a factor of seven. The C7 combines a horizontal single-axis tracker with rows of parabolic mirrors that reflect and concentrate light onto SunPower Maxeon® silicon solar cells.
ASU's associate vice president of Facilities Development and Management stated, "The installation of SunPower's ground-breaking technology helps move ASU closer to our 2014, 20-megawatt solar energy-generating goal."
The SRP board of directors has also set a goal to deliver 20 percent of its retail electricity requirements from sustainable resources by the year 2020.
