Consumers Energy to Acquire Combined Cycle Plant in Michigan

LCG, January 31, 2014--Consumers Energy announced that it will purchase an existing, 540-MW combined cycle natural gas plant rather than construct a previously planned, 700-MW combined cycle plant.

The plant being acquired, DPC Juniper, is located in Jackson, Michigan and commenced operations in 2002. The sale price of the power plant is $155 million. The estimated cost to build the new power plant in Genesee County, Michigan is approximately $700 million.

The acquisition is scheduled to close in January 2016, with the new capacity compensating for an 840-MW capacity reduction caused by the planned retirement of a seven older coal-fired power plants in April 2016.

Consumers plans to withdraw a Certificate of Necessity filing for the constructing the 700-MW generating plant in Thetford Township near Flint. However, Consumers states that it is not cancelling the project, but deferring it. The project will be developed when
circumstances, including customer needs and energy policy, support restarting the project.
