AEP Explores Sale of Unregulated Generation Assets
LCG, January 7, 2015--American Electric Power Company Inc. (AEP) has retained Goldman Sachs to explore the sale of AEP's unregulated generation assets. The apparent focus is on assets located in Ohio, where the generation portfolio totals nearly 8,000 MW of electric generating capacity, with an order of magnitude sale price greater than $3 billion. AEP's combined regulated and unregulated generation portfolio includes over 60 generating stations in the United States, with a capacity of nearly 38,000 MW.
AEP Generation Resources Inc., AEP's unregulated generation company, owns and/or operates a number of power plants operating within PJM (the regional transmission organization). AEP's unregulated plants in Ohio and Indiana include: all or portions of (i) three coal-fired facilities (Gavin Plant, Cardinal Plant (Unit 1) and the Conesville Plant (portion of Unit 4, and Units 5 and 6)) and (ii) two natural gas-fired plants (Waterford and the Darby Plant). AEP also has a non-operating interest in two coal-fired units, the Zimmer and Stuart Plants, plus an interest in the gas-fired Lawrenceburg Plant.
An AEP spokesperson stated, "No decision has been made about the future of those assets. There is no specific timeline for a decision."
