TVA Requests Issuance of License for Watts Bar Unit 2

LCG, August 20, 2015-The Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) submitted documentation to the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) notifying them that construction of the Watts Bar Unit 2 nuclear reactor, located approximately 50 miles northeast of Chattanooga, Tennessee, is substantially complete.

TVA further provided a list of remaining key activities to complete prior to operations and requested that an operating license be issued for the unit. TVA's submittal of its "substantially complete" letter is a major construction and licensing milestone for the project.

The original construction on Watts Bar 2 started over 40 years ago in 1972. However, when load growth forecasts dropped in 1988, the unit was deferred. When Watts Bar 1 began commercial operations in May 1996, it became the last commercial nuclear unit in the United States to come on-line. Construction on Unit 2 resumed in 2007. The capacity of Unit 1 and Unit 2 are 1,100 MW and 1,150 MW, respectively.

TVA must show that construction is substantially complete, that the facility will operate according to the license, and that there is assurance the unit will have no adverse effect on public health and safety prior to the NRC issuing an operating license. The NRC staff is working towards supporting an operating license decision in 2015.
