LCG, September 1, 2015--Southern Company subsidiary Southern Power yesterday announced the acquisition of a controlling interest (51 percent) in the 200-MW Tranquillity Solar Facility in California from Recurrent Energy, a subsidiary of Canadian Solar Inc. Recurrent Energy will retain the remaining interest in the project, which represents its first partnership with Southern Power.
The Tranquillity Solar Facility is scheduled to commence commercial operations in the fourth quarter of 2016. The electricity and associated renewable energy credits (RECs) generated by the facility will be sold under a 15-year power purchase agreement (PPA) to Southern California Edison. Project construction began in July at the 1,900-acre site in Fresno County, California. The project includes the installation of over 800,000 polycrystalline photovoltaic (PV) solar modules that will be mounted on tracking tables. Signal Energy Constructors is managing the engineering, procurement and construction of the facility.
Southern Company???s Chairman, President and CEO stated, ???Southern Company's strategic solar expansion is helping diversify our energy mix while strengthening our industry leadership in solar. We will continue to develop the right projects and develop innovative solutions as we shape America's energy future."
In April, Southern Power announced the acquisition of a controlling interest in the 32-MW Lost Hills-Blackwell Solar Facility in California from First Solar, Inc.
