MHI Vestas Upgrades Offshore Wind Turbine to 9 MW
LCG, January 27, 2017--MHI Vestas Offshore Wind yesterday announced that its uprated 8 MW wind turbine can reach 9 MW at specific site conditions. The company stated that its prototype V164 broke the energy generation record for a commercially available offshore wind turbine on December 1, 2016, when it produced 216,000 kWh over a 24-hour period at Østerild. The increased energy production per wind turbine will reduce energy costs.
The company's CTO stated, "We are confident that the 9 MW machine has now proven that it is ready for the market and we believe that our wind turbine will play an integral part in enabling the offshore industry to continue to drive down the cost of energy."
The 9 MW wind turbine is based on the V164-8.0 MW, a machine already installed at the 258 MW Burbo Bank Extension.
A recent report released by WindEurope concludes that offshore wind in Europe saw a net addition of 1,558 MW of installed grid-connected capacity in 2016, which was 48% less than in 2015, when capacity additions peaked. Europe now has a total installed offshore capacity of 12,631 MW. In spite of the drop in new capacity in 2016, WindEurope projects offshore wind capacity to nearly double to 24.6 GW by 2020.
