EIA Estimates Record U.S. Electric Generating Capacity Additions in 2026, with Solar in the Lead

LCG, February 20, 2026--The EIA today issued an "in-brief analysis" that estimates U.S. power plant developers and operators plan to complete a record installation of 86 GW of new, utility-scale electric generating capacity that is connected to the U.S. power grid in 2026. Last year, 53 GW of new capacity was added to the grid, which was the largest capacity installation in a single year since 2002. Thus the estimate of 86 GW of new capacity in 2026 is a whopping 33 GW greater than the year prior. It should be noted that over 20 GW of the 86 GW of new capacity this year is estimated to be completed in December.

DONG Energy Announces Opening of the Burbo Bank Extension Project with 8-MW Offshore Wind Turbines

LCG, May 23, 2017--The Burbo Bank Extension Project, a new offshore wind farm in Liverpool Bay, UK, opened on May 17 and became the first offshore wind farm to make commercial use of the MHI Vestas V164-8.0 MW wind turbines. The wind farm is a joint venture between DONG Energy (50%) and its partners PKA (25%) and KIRKBI A/S, parent company of the LEGO Group (25%).

The 8-MW wind turbines are massive, measuring 195 meters from sea level to blade tip. Each blade weighs 35 metric tonnes and measures 80 meters long. The maximum output for the Burbo Bank Extension Project is 258 MW.

DONG Energy's Chief Executive Officer (CEO) stated, "Burbo Bank Extension showcases the rapid innovation in the offshore wind industry. Less than ten years ago at Burbo Bank, we were the first to install Siemens 3.6-MW wind turbines and in this short time, the wind turbines have more than doubled in capacity. Pushing innovation in this way reduces the cost of electricity from offshore wind and will help to advance the offshore wind industry across the world."

The CEO of MHI Vestas stated, "The inauguration of Burbo Bank Extension represents a noteworthy milestone in the history of MHI Vestas and our stakeholders. We are extremely proud to supply 32 of our 8 MW turbines to DONG Energy and help provide renewable energy for more than 230,000 UK homes."
