MHI Vestas Offshore Wind Announces New 9.5 MW Wind Turbine
LCG, June 9, 2017--MHI Vestas Offshore Wind Tuesday unveiled the next iteration in its V164 wind turbine series, a 9.5 MW turbine. The company claims it to be the "most powerful serially-produced wind turbine in the world." The announcement follows closely behind the release of its 9 MW wind turbine.
The new 9.5 MW turbine is built on the V164 turbine platform, with 80-meter blades that result in a swept area of 21,124 meters-squared. The approximate hub height is 105 meters, and the approximate tip height is 187 meters. The Chief Technology Officer at MHI Vestas stated, "With only minimal design changes, including a redesigned gearbox and cooling system upgrades, this turbine continues the legacy of the proven V164 platform and is available now to all MHI Vestas customers."
The CEO of MHI Vestas stated, 'As a leader in the offshore wind industry, we are committed to lowering the cost of energy through innovative turbine technology. The launch of our V164-9.5 MW turbine is a testament to that leadership and to the ingenuity of our engineers and technicians. The V164-9.5 MW is built on the industry-leading V164 platform, the most powerful platform in operation."
Only last month, the Burbo Bank Extension Project, a new offshore wind farm in Liverpool Bay, United Kingdom, opened and became the first offshore wind farm to make commercial use of the MHI Vestas V164-8.0 MW wind turbines. The wind farm is a joint venture between DONG Energy (50%) and its partners PKA (25%) and KIRKBI A/S, parent company of the LEGO Group (25%).
MHI Vestas Offshore Wind is a collaboration between parent companies Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) and Vestas Wind Systems that was founded in April 2014.
