Google Announces Gas-fired Broadwing Energy Project with CCS

LCG, October 23, 2025--Google announced today a first-of-its kind agreement to support a natural gas-fired power plant with carbon capture and storage (CCS). The 400-MW Broadwing Energy power project, located in Decatur, Illinois, will capture and permanently store its carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions. MidAmerican Proceeds with Diverse Projects in Iowa

LCG, December 21, 2004--Phase 2 of MidAmerican Energy Company's Greater Des Moines Energy Center became operational last Friday, bringing the total station capacity up to 540 MW. The initial phase of the gas-fired, combined-cycle plant provided 350 MW of capacity and began commercial operations in May 2003.

MidAmerican is also proceeding with two wind farms in Iowa. Each wind farm will include 100, 1.5-MW wind turbines, with a combined generating capacity of over 300 MW. One wind farm, located in Buena Vista and Sac Counties, is expected to be completed later this month. The other wind farm will be located in Wright and Hamilton Counties and is expected to commence operations next summer.

To round out MidAmerican's efforts, a proposed decision and order issued last Wednesday from the Iowa Utilities Board gave MidAmerican approval to proceed with its proposed 122-mile long, 345-kV electric transmission line designed to complement the new, 790-MW coal-fired unit at Council Bluffs Energy Center. Construction on the new unit began in the fall of 2003, and the target date for commercial operations is summer 2007.
