AREVA and MHI Submit Nuclear Design for Approval by Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission
LCG, February 23, 2011--ATMEA, a joint venture between Areva and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI), submitted the ATMEA1 reactor for pre-project design review with the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC). Areva, the province of New Brunswick and the utility, New Brunswick Power, executed a letter of intent last July to develop a nuclear power generating facility, and the ATMEA1 reactor is under consideration.
The ATMEA1 reactor is a 1,100 MW Generation III+ pressurized water reactor (PWR) that employs a technology developed by ATMEA. The ATMEA1 reactor is certified in France. The nuclear power project is planned for a Clean Energy Park to be built near the Point Lepreau nuclear station in New Brunswick. Areva would construct the facilities, which would include a mid-sized reactor and renewable generation.
The existing Point Lepreau station commenced operations in February 1983 and consists of one CANDU-6 nuclear unit, with a net capacity of 635 MW. The site was initially approved to be home to two reactors. NB Power began refurbishing the facility in April 2008, and the unit is scheduled to return to service in the fall of 2012. The refurbishment is expected to extend the station's life for another 25 to 30 years.
