Finland's New Nuclear Reactor Delivering Power to the Grid

LCG, March 15, 2022--Finland's new nuclear reactor, Olkiluoto 3, commenced operations Saturday and began delivering power to the grid. The Finnish operator Teollisuuden Voima Oyj (TVO) stated that the 1,600-MW reactor will be gradually increased from operating at 103 MW to full capacity over a trial period of four months. Once regular electricity production is achieved, the reactor will supply approximately 14 percent of Finland's total electricity demand. Furthermore, it will significantly reduce electricity imports from Norway, Russia and Sweden.

The Olkiluoto 3 reactor is the first new reactor to be commissioned in Finland in more than 40 years. The reactor design is a third generation European-type pressurized water reactor (EPR) developed and built by a joint venture between France’s Areva and Germany’s Siemens. Finland now has five nuclear reactors at two power plants located along the Baltic Sea.

Construction began in 2005 and was originally scheduled to be completed in 2009. A number of technical and legal problems have led to the significant delays in completion and cost increases.

The Olkiluoto 3 is among western Europe's first new reactors in over ten years.
