LCG, September 2, 2026--The U.S. Secretary of Energy yesterday issued an emergency order to keep coal generation online and address critical grid reliability issues in Florida. The emergency order directs the Orlando Utilities Commission (OUC) to ensure that Unit 1, a coal-fired generating facility at the Stanton Energy Center in Orlando, Florida, remains available to operate. Unit 1 was scheduled to enter a premature extended cold shutdown in June 2026. This order is in effect beginning today through November 30, 2026.

Energy Secretary Issues Emergency Order in Florida to Keep Coal-Fired Power Generation from Shutdowns and Reduce the Risk of Blackouts and High Costs
LCG, September 2, 2026--The U.S. Secretary of Energy yesterday issued an emergency order to keep coal generation online and address critical grid reliability issues in Florida. The emergency order directs the Orlando Utilities Commission (OUC) to ensure that Unit 1, a coal-fired generating facility at the Stanton Energy Center in Orlando, Florida, remains available to operate. Unit 1 was scheduled to enter a premature extended cold shutdown in June 2026. This order is in effect beginning today through November 30, 2026.
OUC serves customers in Central Florida. For days, temperatures have surged into the high 90s, with heat indexes above 110°F. Last month, an extended stretch of extreme heat covered the area, and customers set new summer electric peak demand records across Central Florida, surpassing the previous mark set just a month earlier on July 8. In response to the extreme heat, OUC has been increasing conservation guidance, outreach, and assistance to its customers.
The Secretary stated, "Taking reliable generation offline compromises energy reliability and needlessly raises energy costs for Americans.?The Trump Administration will continue to ensure that Floridians have access to affordable, reliable, and secure energy to power their homes."
The Department of Energy’s (DOE's) announcement noted that, as outlined in its?Resource Adequacy Report, power outages could increase by 100 times in 2030 if the U.S. continues to take reliable power offline. The DOE further noted that, due to similar emergency orders, coal plants across the nation are being saved from premature retirement and reversing plans to shut down. According to the DOE, more than 17 GW of coal-powered electricity generation were saved from going offline in 2025.
