NRC Okays Vermont Yankee License Transfer to AmerGen

LCG, July 10--The Nuclear Regulatory Commission said yesterday it has approved the transfer of Vermont Yankee Nuclear Power Station's operating license to AmerGen Vermont, LLC, an ad hoc subsidiary of AmerGen Energy Co.

The license for the 500 megawatt plant located near Brattleboro, Vt., has been held by the facilitys operators, Vermont Yankee Nuclear Power Corp., since it began operation in 1972.

AmerGen Vermont was established by AmerGen to acquire and operate Vermont Yankee. AmerGen itself is a 50-50 joint venture between Peco Energy Co. and British Energy Plc, the United Kingdoms nuclear generation company, to buy and operate nuclear power plants in the U.S.

The NRC said the Vermont Yankee license transfer review was similar to others it conducted in conjunction with the acquisition by AmerGen of Three Mile Island Unit 1, in Pennsylvania, the Clinton nuclear power station in Illinois and the Oyster Creek Nuclear Generating Station in New Jersey.

AmerGen last year purchased Vermont Yankee from its 13 owners, Central Vermont Public Service Corp. (31.3 percent), New England Power Co. (20.0 percent), Green Mountain Power Co. (17.9 percent), Connecticut Light & Power Corp. (9.5 percent), Central Maine Power Co. (4.0 percent), Public Service Co. of New Hampshire (4.0 percent), BurIington Electric Department (3.6 percent), Montaup Electric Co. (2.5 percent), Cambridge Electric Light Co. (2.5 percent), Western Massachusetts Electric Co. (2.5 percent), Vermont Electric Cooperative Inc. (1.0 percent), Washington Electric Cooperative Inc. (0.6 percent) and Lyndonville Electric Department (0.6 percent).
