FERC’s Environmental Draft Says Guardian Pipeline OK

LCG, July 12, 2000--Developers of the proposed Guardian natural gas pipeline that will connect northern Illinois and southern Wisconsin said yesterday that the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission staff has issued a draft environmental impact statement that says the new line would be environmentally acceptable.

"We're pleased that the FERC staff took such prompt action determining that Guardian would havelimited environmental impact," said Todd Rushton, president of Viking Gas Transmission, a Guardian partner company. "This action, taken two months ahead of the date requested in our application, is a major milestone toward making the Guardian Pipeline a reality,"

The draft environmental impact statement covers the environmental aspects of building andoperating the 149-mile pipeline. FERC will take written public comments on the statement until August 28, and will conduct four public meetings along Guardian's route next month. The commission will issue a final environmental impact statement, probably early next year, and rule on the project shortly thereafter.

FERC has already found that the pipeline is in the public interest and, last year, the Wisconsin Public Service Commission gave preliminary approval for a utility to include a Guardian Pipeline gas purchase agreement in its gas supply plans.
