EPA Announces Proposed Rule Action to Revise ELG's and Support Reliable, Affordable Coal-fired Power Plants

LCG, May 14, 2026--The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced today that it is proposing a rule to revise wastewater limits, known as effluent limitations guidelines (ELG), for steam electric power plants that will help improve grid reliability and lower electricity prices while continuing to support clean and safe water resources. If finalized, the EPA's proposal is estimated to reduce electricity generation costs by as much as $1.1 billion annually, which could provide cost-savings to American consumers.

DOE Awards $94 Million to Eight American Companies to Accelerate SMR Deployments and Develop Supply Chain

LCG, May 14, 2026--The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) today announced the selection of eight companies to support the near-term deployment of advanced light-water small modular reactors (SMRs) in the United States. The DOE states that awardees will collectively receive more than $94 million in Federal cost-shared funding to spur additional Gen III+ SMR deployments by addressing key gaps that have hindered the domestic nuclear industry in licensing, supply chain, and site preparation.

Temelin Nuclear Plant Likely to Start in September

LCG, July 24, 2000--One unit of the controversial nuclear power plant nearing completion near Ceske Budeovice in the Czech Republic could start up in late August or early September, according to the U.S. company called in to bring the Soviet-designed facility up to Western standards.

Westinghouse Electric Co. said Friday it had completed installation of fuel assemblies in the 1,000 megawatt Unit 1 of the Temelin nuclear power plant and the facility would begin "critical testing," meaning a nuclear reaction would be taking place, late next month or in early September.

The Temelin plant, which has been under construction for 15 years, has been the subject of heated diplomatic objections from neighboring Austria, whose government is opposed to nuclear power.

With the Czech application to join the European Union contingent in part on upgrading the plant to meet Western standards for safety and operation, Westinghouse was called in and awarded five contracts which included replacement of the entire instrumentation and control system, supply of nuclear fuel and associated components, the diagnostic and monitoring system, and the radiation monitoring system; and developing emergency operating procedures.

The company said its work will make Temelin equal to any advanced nuclear power plant in the world. Jeffery L. Pelusi, director of European Projects for Westinghouse Nuclear Automation, said "The Temelin project is without question the most complex integrated information, control andprotection system ever installed."

Pelusi added "Once operational, Temelin will provide the Czech Republic with clean, efficient nuclear energy that is produced in a nuclear power plant that is both economical and safe."

The Bohemian city of Ceske Budeovice is known by Germans as Budweiss, and for centuries beer brewed there has been called Budweiser. That has long been a bone of contention between the Czech city and Anheuser-Busch of St. Louis.
