New Bolivian Power Plants would Serve Brazil
LCG, July 27, 2000--Natural gas prices in Bolivia are about a third of those in Brazil, a circumstance prompting Enron Corp. of the U.S. and Brazils state-owned oil company Petrobras to plan new power plants in Bolivia to send power across the border into Brazil, the business newspaper Valor reported yesterday.Enron said it would build a 150 megawatt gas-fired power plant in the Bolivian border town of Porto Suarez and construct a 14-mile transmission line to hook it up with the Brazilian grid. "The choice to build on Bolivian soil was based on economic and strategic criteria," said Enron Energy vice president Joao Carlos Alburquerque.Power from the Porto Suarez plant would be bought by Elektro, a Brazilian subsidiary of Enron.Petrobras also wants to build a 150 megawatt plant in Bolivia and is negotiating to bring the Bolivian government in on the deal. Petrobras owns rights to about 10,600 billion cubic feet of Bolivian natural gas reserves, nearly a third of the countrys total.Bolivia would like Petrobras to accept gas for the power plant from any source, but Petrobras wants all the gas used for plant fuel to come from its own Bolivian gas production units.
