California Hamlet Gets Solar Panels on City Carport

LCG, July 31, 2000--The public works department of the California town of Colton has a new power plant; that is, a solar panel array on the roof of its carport. The 22 kilowatt installation consists of 288 solar modules manufactured by Siemens.

The power plant provides enough juice to light 220 100-watt lightbulbs which is probably enough for the public works building, as the carport provides room for only 14 vehicles. There is a lot of sun in Colton, which is about five miles from San Bernardino, which means the solar panels will work most of the time. But so will the air-conditioners in the city offices.

The project was built for the City of Colton Electric Utility. The municipal utilitys project manager, Gerald Katz, said "We believe that solar energy will play an increasingly important role for the utility in the coming years."

Applied Power Corp., a Lacey, Wash., company, said it had completed the installation. Actually, the company said the installation was done by its local contractor, Renewable Energy Concepts of San Luis Obispo, Calif.

San Luis Obispo is "local" if you are in Pismo Beach, but Colton is more than 200 miles away, as the crow flies.
