EIA Estimates Record U.S. Electric Generating Capacity Additions in 2026, with Solar in the Lead

LCG, February 20, 2026--The EIA today issued an "in-brief analysis" that estimates U.S. power plant developers and operators plan to complete a record installation of 86 GW of new, utility-scale electric generating capacity that is connected to the U.S. power grid in 2026. Last year, 53 GW of new capacity was added to the grid, which was the largest capacity installation in a single year since 2002. Thus the estimate of 86 GW of new capacity in 2026 is a whopping 33 GW greater than the year prior. It should be noted that over 20 GW of the 86 GW of new capacity this year is estimated to be completed in December.

Point Beach Operations Taken Over by New Firm

LCG, Aug. 9, 2000--Wisconsin Electric Power Co. said on Tuesday it has transferred operating authority of its Point Beach Nuclear Plant to the new Nuclear Management Co. effective yesterday. Under the agreement, the utility will maintain ownership of the plant, located near Two Rivers, Wisc.

The 30-year-old Point Beach has an output of 1,022 megawatts, about 30 percent of Wisconsin Electrics total.

Nuclear Management was formed by a group of Midwestern utilities to take over operations of their nuclear power plants when it became apparent that ownership by a utility of one or even two reactors was both economically and operationally impractical.

"Having (Nuclear Management) oversee operations of Point Beach, as well as the other nuclear plants, makes good business sense," said Richard Grigg, president and chief operating officer of Wisconsin Electric. "Customers will benefit from the enhancements provided by (a) team focused solely on nuclear plant operations and applying best practices."

Nuclear Management has assumed, or will assume, operational authority for Kewaunee, located in Kewaunee, Wisc., and owned by Wisconsin Public Service Corp., Alliant Energy Inc. and Madison Gas & Electric Co.; Duane Arnold Energy Center, located in Palo, Iowa, and owned by Alliant Energy, Central Iowa Power Cooperative and Corn Belt Power Cooperative; Monticello, located in Monticello, Minn., and owned by Northern States Power Co.; and Prairie Island, located in Welch, Minn.,and also owned by Northern States.
