U.S. Coal-fired Generating Capacity Retirements in 2025 Are Less Than 20 Percent of Retirements in 2022

LCG, April 13, 2026--The EIA today released an "In-brief Analysis" of U.S. coal-fired generating capacity retirements in 2025. A highlight of the analysis is that, during 2025, the electric power sector retired 2.6 GW of coal-fired generating capacity at four power plants, which is (i) the least since 2010 and (ii) 5.9 GW less than the planned retirement of 8.5 GW at the beginning of 2025.

EPA Proposes Rule Changes to Coal Combustion Residuals (CCR) Requirements to Restore American Energy Dominance

LCG, April 10, 2026--The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced yesterday a rule proposing several revisions to the federal regulations governing the disposal of coal combustion residuals (CCR) and the beneficial use of CCR. The EPA designed the rule to encourage resource recovery, allow for site-specific considerations in permitting, and provide regulatory relief while continuing to protect human health and the environment. The EPA will be accepting comments on the rule for 60 days after publication in the Federal Register, and it will also hold an online public hearing on the rule.

Replacement Steam Generators Arrive at Arkansas 2

LCG, Aug. 9, 2000--Westinghouse Electric Co. said yesterday that two replacement steam generators for the 941 megawatt Unit 2 of Arkansas Nuclear one, a plant owned and operated by Entergy Corp., had arrived on the plant site and installation would begin next month.

The steam generators were manufactured by Equipos Nucleares S.A. of Spain, aWestinghouse subcontractor and licensee. They are the largest designed by Westinghouse and the largest built by ENSA. They were manufactured in 33 months and shipped from Ensa on July 9.

The two steam generators bring to nine the number manufactured by Ensa for Westinghouse. Three were delivered to The Southern Co. earlier this year for installation in the Farley Unit 1 plant and four original equipment steam generators were delivered to a site in China over the last several months.

Another seven steam generators are being built for Westinghouse by Ensa. Three will go to Farley Unit 2 and four will go to the South Texas Project facility operated by Reliant Energy Inc.
