Geothermal Visitor Center at Geysers to Open

LCG, Aug. 15, 2000--A modern visitors center will open in November at The Geysers in Northern California, the worlds largest geothermal power complex, according to Calpine Corp., owner of the 880 megawatt power plant that harnesses the energy of the earths core.

Speakers at this mornings groundbreaking for the 6,050-square-foot visitors center included local notables and participants in the design and construction of the facility. The usual artists renderings and displays were provided for guests to ooh and ahh over.

This is news because The Geysers has been around for a long time and until Calpine recently acquired it from Pacific Gas & Electric Co. it has always offered tours to select groups. This summer, Calpine expanded that program, but reservations were still required.

When the visitors center opens in the hamlet of Middletown, the public will be able to drop by and take a look any time between 9:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m., free of charge, any day except Tuesdays and Wednesdays.

Its worth it, and on the way you pass through the California wine-making center of Napa Valley. You can return to the San Francisco Bay Area by going through wine-producing Sonoma County, which is a lot of wine. Take a designated driver.

Calpine senior vice president Fred Manuel, noting that The Geysers has been producing power for 40 years, said "In celebration of the long successful history there, we are building this new center to highlight the important role geothermal energy contributes to California's energy mix, and to provide a gathering place for the local community and geothermal experts from around the globe."

The center will include an energy exhibit hall, a multi-purpose room that can seat up to 60 people for meals or 85 for meetings, a conference room, gift shop, snack bar, catering kitchen, landscaped shady picnic area and, of course, public restrooms. There will even be a Calpine employment kiosk where the company will recruit employees for its rapidly growing fleet of conventional power plants.

Exhibits at the visitors center will include three-dimensional displays describing geothermal geology and well drilling technology, and showing how geothermal and natural gas power plants work. A vast topographical model of The Geysers will show the location of each power plant in operation.
