LCG, April 13, 2026--The EIA today released an "In-brief Analysis" of U.S. coal-fired generating capacity retirements in 2025. A highlight of the analysis is that, during 2025, the electric power sector retired 2.6 GW of coal-fired generating capacity at four power plants, which is (i) the least since 2010 and (ii) 5.9 GW less than the planned retirement of 8.5 GW at the beginning of 2025.

LCG, April 10, 2026--The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced yesterday a rule proposing several revisions to the federal regulations governing the disposal of coal combustion residuals (CCR) and the beneficial use of CCR. The EPA designed the rule to encourage resource recovery, allow for site-specific considerations in permitting, and provide regulatory relief while continuing to protect human health and the environment. The EPA will be accepting comments on the rule for 60 days after publication in the Federal Register, and it will also hold an online public hearing on the rule.

Goodman has been promoted to senior vice president for research and environmental affairs by The Southern Co., replacing Dr. Bob Woodall who retired in May. Dr. Goodman has nearly 30 years of experience at Southern in research and environmental affairs. He is chairman of the Electric Power Research Institute's Environment and Health Business Unit Council, a former chairman of the Environmental Staff Committee of the Business Roundtable, and member of the EPA's Clean Air Act Advisory Committee.Henry P. Linginfelter, vice president for regulatory affairs with Atlanta Gas Light Co., will become president of Virginia Natural Gas Inc. upon the closing of AGL Resources' acquisition of VNG later this year. Linginfelter has been with Atlanta Gas Light for 17 years, becoming a vice president three years ago.David Phillips, currently general manager in the Southern Region of Carolina Power & Light Co., will become vice president in charge of the Western Region at the close of the company's acquisition of Florida Progress Corp. He will replace Bill Habermeyer, who earlier this month was named president and chief executive of Florida Power.DeathsWilliam Harllee Branch Jr., retired chairman of The Southern Co. and chief executive from 1957 to 1970, died August 16 at 94. Harllee Branch joined Southern Co. subsidiary Georgia Power Co. in 1949, following a career at the Atlanta law firm MacDougald, Troutman, Sams and Branch, which served as general counsel for Georgia Power.Cliff Spieler, former vice president for public relations with the New York Power Authority, died August 14 at his home. He was 70. Before joining the Authority, he had spent 15 years as a newspaper reporter and editor for the Gannett Newspapers, principally at the Niagara Falls Gazette. He also worked as a correspondent for the New York Times and the Associated Press and wrote articles for a number of national publications. Spieler was a member of the Overseas Press Club, the New York Press Club and the Society of Silurians, an organization of New York City journalists. He also was a member of the U.S. Marine Corps Combat Corespondents Association.
