Dresden Unit 2 Gets Four More Years from NRC
LCG, Aug. 30, 2000The Nuclear Regulatory Commission has extended the operating license for the Dresden Unit 2 nuclear power plant by four years, compensating for a like period of time when the plant was already licensed but still being built. The facility, owned by Commonwealth Edison Co., received its 40-year license from the NRC on Jan. 10, 1966, but did not begin operations until June 9, 1970. The agency, in effect, returned to ComEd the four unused years of its license to operate the plant. The NRC issued the amendment following a review, which concluded that Dresden Unit 2 could be operated safely through the construction recapture period."This is the right thing for us to do at Dresden and it will allow us to recognize the full value of thestation," said Oliver D. Kingsley Jr., president of ComEd's Nuclear Generation Group and the utility's chief nuclear officer.
