EIA Estimates Record U.S. Electric Generating Capacity Additions in 2026, with Solar in the Lead

LCG, February 20, 2026--The EIA today issued an "in-brief analysis" that estimates U.S. power plant developers and operators plan to complete a record installation of 86 GW of new, utility-scale electric generating capacity that is connected to the U.S. power grid in 2026. Last year, 53 GW of new capacity was added to the grid, which was the largest capacity installation in a single year since 2002. Thus the estimate of 86 GW of new capacity in 2026 is a whopping 33 GW greater than the year prior. It should be noted that over 20 GW of the 86 GW of new capacity this year is estimated to be completed in December.

Dresden Unit 2 Gets Four More Years from NRC

LCG, Aug. 30, 2000The Nuclear Regulatory Commission has extended the operating license for the Dresden Unit 2 nuclear power plant by four years, compensating for a like period of time when the plant was already licensed but still being built.

The facility, owned by Commonwealth Edison Co., received its 40-year license from the NRC on Jan. 10, 1966, but did not begin operations until June 9, 1970. The agency, in effect, returned to ComEd the four unused years of its license to operate the plant.

The NRC issued the amendment following a review, which concluded that Dresden Unit 2 could be operated safely through the construction recapture period.

"This is the right thing for us to do at Dresden and it will allow us to recognize the full value of thestation," said Oliver D. Kingsley Jr., president of ComEd's Nuclear Generation Group and the utility's chief nuclear officer.
