Spain's Fenosa to Buy Two AES Power Firms
LCG, Aug. 31, 2000AES Corp. of the U.S. said yesterday it would sell as planned two Colombian power companies to Unin Fenosa, Spain's third-largest electricity generating company. Fenosa will pay $235 million for the companies.AEC acquired the two Colombian firms when it bought Venezuela's Grupo EDC earlier this year in what began as a hostile takeover bid. Fenosa, which initially contested AEC for EDC, agreed to back off in exchange for the right to buy the regional power company Epsa for $100 million and another, Electrocosta-Electricaribe, for $135 million. In addition to buying Epsa and Electrocosta-Electricaribe, Fenosa will exercise an option to purchase Genevapaca, a Venezuelan refinery power supplier, for a price to be agreed upon at a later date. The properties in Colombia cost EDC about $555 million when they were acquired in 1997, but have proved to be a headache because of guerilla activity and governmental red tape.
