New York Poised to Close Last Coal-fire Power Plant

LCG, December 4, 2019--The last operating coal-fired power plant in New York is moving toward closure shortly. Last month, Somerset Operating Company, a subsidiary of Riesling Power LLC, submitted a request to the New York State Public Service Commission (NYSPSC) to waive the state's required, 180-day notice to close the Somerset Station, allowing the facility to be retired on February 15, 2020. Closure is contingent on approvals by both NYSPSC and the New York Independent System Operator (NYISO), which will evaluate if it will cause an adverse effect on grid reliability.

Illinois Gov. George Ryan welcomed the plant, noting there is an increased demand for energy. "Iwelcome Panda Energy's contribution to our state's growth and development," Ryan said. "Inaddition, this plant will provide a much needed tax base that will help improve facilities for the localschool district."

The plant will add several million dollars in taxes to the community and will make $3 million to $5million in local purchases each year it is in operation, according to Garry Hubbard, a Panda senior vice president.

Hubbard said about 500 jobs and an estimated payroll of $50 million will be created during an 18-month construction period. Once the plant is operational, 46 full-time jobs will open with an annual payroll of $2 million to $3 million. In addition, 100 off-site support jobs will be created.
