Enron, Petrobras to Build Power Plant Near Rio
LCG, Sept. 15, 2000Enron Corp. and Petrobras, Brazil's big, government-owned oil and gas business, have formed a partnership to build a 350 megawatt power plant at Seropedica in the state of Rio de Janeiro, an official of Enron South America said yesterday.Joao Carlos Albuquerque, Enron South America's vice president for supply, said "We chose to go for this partnership with Petrobras to the detriment of other projects in the United States because it will be advantageous for Enron"The $250 million plant is penciled in to begin commercial operation in June 2001. It will be built adjacent to the site of another Enron project, the Riogen plant which will produce 500 megawatts of power after an investment of about $350 million.Fuel for the new plant will be provided by Petrobras under a five-year agreement. Albuquerque said it was possible that the plant would be expanded from the initial 350 megawatts, noting that capacities of around 500 megawatts were the norm for new generation.
