Scottish Power Gets Shelf Space at English Supermarket

LCG, Oct. 2, 2000Scottish Power has pushed rival British Gas off the shelves of a large chain of supermarkets in the United Kingdom, cutting a deal that could help the Edinburgh, Scotland-based utility expand into the heart of England.

Sainsbury's, a chain of 440 supermarkets, will market juice from Scottish Power to its 17 million Reward Card holders, who earn points for purchases made at the markets. Card holders who sign up for service from Scottish Power will get 25 in Reward Card vouchers, which is like getting $36.50 on your Safeway card.

Most of Scottish Power's customers are in Scotland and the north of England, but this alliance should give it entre into Middle England. Industry observers said the arrangement could net Scottish Power tens of thousands of new customers.
