Operators Shut Down Niagara Mohawk's Nine Mile Point 1

LCG, Oct. 3, 2000--Operators manually shut down the Nine Mile Point Unit 1 nuclear power plant at 6:25 a.m. yesterday after the unplanned opening of a reactor relief valve, Niagara Mohawk Power Corp. said.

The opening of the relief valve lead to increased water levels in the plant's drywell, a structuresurrounding the reactor and designed to collect water discharged from the reactor. The increasedwater level in the drywell caused operators to declare, as required, an "Unusual Event" and notify the Nuclear Regulatory Commission.

The report was filed at 7:12 a.m. and noted that the reactor was manually "scrammed" from an operating level of less that 1 percent of capacity. It was just beginning the restart process following a maintenance outage.

Later yesterday, Niagara Mohawk reported that Nine Mile Point 1 was in cold shutdown mode and that the Unusual Event was terminated at 9:05 a.m.
