LCG, Oct. 12, 2000Atmos Energy Corp. said yesterday it has agreed to sell its natural gas distribution system in Gaffney, S.C., to Piedmont Natural Gas Co. for about $5.8 million.

The system, which Atmos operated through its United Cities Gas Co. subsidiary, serves some 5,100 customers in northernmost South Carolina. Piedmont Natural Gas said it intends to keep the local Gaffney office and retain existing employees.

Robert W. Best, Atmos chief executive, said "We are pleased to be able to consummate this sale to a company of Piedmont's excellent reputation and know that they will continue to provide safe and reliable gas service to the Gaffney area."

Ware F. Schiefer, who heads Piedmont Natural Gas, said his company "will provide the residents and businesses of Gaffney with the same reliable and safe natural gas service they were accustomed to receiving from Atmos Energy."

The transaction is subject to regulatory approval and is expected to close by the end of this year.
