LCG, October 28, 2025--NextEra Energy and Google yesterday announced two agreements that will help meet growing electricity demand from artificial intelligence (AI) with clean, reliable, 24/7 nuclear power and strengthen the nation's nuclear leadership. First, Google signed a new, 25-year agreement for power generated at the Duane Arnold Energy Center, Iowa's only nuclear power facility. The 601-MW boiling water reactor unit was shut down in 2020 and is expected to commence operations by the first quarter of 2029, pending regulatory approvals to restart the plant.

LCG, October 23, 2025--Google announced today a first-of-its kind agreement to support a natural gas-fired power plant with carbon capture and storage (CCS). The 400-MW Broadwing Energy power project, located in Decatur, Illinois, will capture and permanently store its carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions. By agreeing to buy most of the power it generates, Google is helping get this new, baseload power source built and connected to the regional grid that supports our data centers.

Utilities Rush to Meet FERC Deadline for RTO Filing
LCG, Oct. 17, 2000Electric utilities owning transmission facilities rushed yesterday to meet an October 16 deadline set by the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission for the filing of proposals for joining a regional transmission organization. From the state of Washington to Florida, the companies told FERC what transmission assets would be transferred to an RTO, how they would be transferred, the accounting treatment of the transfer, what sort of animal the RTO would be and how the RTO would be governed.- In the Northwest, Avista Corp. (the former Washington Water Power Co.), Montana Power Co. (which is selling its transmission and distribution systems to Northwester Public Service Co.), Portland General Electric Co. (in the process of being acquired from Enron Corp. by Sierra Pacific Resources Crop.), Puget Sound Energy Corp. and Sierra Pacific's two Nevada utilities, Sierra Pacific Power co. and Nevada Power co., would form a profit-making "transco" to be called RTO West. It would manage transmission facilities in Oregon, Washington, Nevada and Montana and parts of California and Idaho.
- Entergy Corp. of New Orleans, a sprawling utility doing business in Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi and Texas, would form its own independent transmission company, also a profit-making transco. Entergy's president of fossil operations and transmission, Frank Gallaher, said "The transco model is the best vehicle to facilitate the grid expansion that is necessary to create a robust wholesale power market for both the generators and the wholesale and retain customers."
- Duke Energy Corp., Carolina Power & Light Co. and Scana Corp. would form another profit-making transmission manager to be called GridSouth Transco. The venture would manage 22,500 miles of wires that are plugged into about 34,500 megawatts of generation. Jim Hinton, Duke's senior vice president for transmission, said "Ultimately, we'd like to see a transmission company that spans the Southeast, and we are open to other southeastern utilities becoming part of GridSouth."
- Florida's three investor-owned utilities, Florida power & Light Co., Florida power Corp. and Tampa Electric Co., also want a profitable transco, which they said they have been working more than eight months on. According to Paul Evanson, president of FPL, it would be limited to peninsular Florida and would use "a traditional for-profit business model which aligns the interests of customers, management and shareholders."
- Dayton Power & Light Co. said simply that it wanted to join the Alliance Regional Transmission organization, a group that already exists, though it has not received the imprimatur of FERC.
