Allegheny Energy to Build 1,080 Megawatt Arizona Plant

LCG, Oct. 19, 2000--Allegheny Energy Inc. said yesterday that its unregulated generation subsidiary plans to build a 1,080 megawatt natural gas-fired merchant generating facility in Arizona, about 75 miles west of Phoenix.

Allan J. Noia, chief executive of Allegheny Energy, said "This facility will give us our first generating capacity in the western United States and shows we are making significant progress toward becoming a national energy supplier."

Allegheny Energy Supply Co. is expected to begin construction of the $540 million combined-cycle facility sometime in 2002, with commercial operation scheduled for 2005. Output from the plant will be sold into wholesale markets served by the Western Systems Coordinating Council, including most of the western U.S. and Canada.

Arizona's La Paz County looks forward to the revenue the plant will produce. Joyce Barker, a county supervisor, said "Our county will see a big boost in the economy during construction, as well as several million dollars in increased tax revenue once it is complete."
