750 Megawatt Merchant Plant Proposed for Long Island
LCG, Nov. 13, 2000-- A New York City energy company has proposed a $400 million, 750 megawatt, gas-burning merchant power plant to be built on 112 acres near the Brookhaven National Laboratory on Long island, an local paper reported Friday. The Long Island Business News said the plant would be built at the corner of the Long Island Expressway and Route 46 because of its proximity to power lines, gas lines, its industrial zoning and its distance from residences. Caithness Energy LLC has taken an option to buy the land."We looked at New York and asked ourselves where is additional power needed," said Daniel McBrearty, Caithness manager of project development. "It was determined that Long Island is a load pocket. It has constraints as to how much power can be brought in. And presently its demands are barely being met."The proposed plant would be a natural gas-fueled, combined-cycle facility with the capability to burn fuel oil as a backup. "If our access to natural gas is not available, we will have to use fuel oil to maintain reliability," McBrearty said. The Town of Brookhaven has political jurisdiction over the site, but has not yet been approached with a proposal. Caithness said it plans to file a proposal with the New York State Public Service Commission early next year and hopes to begin construction a year later. Commercial operation could begin in mid- to late 2003.
