Kinder Morgan Unit to Run Gas Pipeline into St. Louis

LCG, Nov. 30, 2000--The Natural Gas Pipeline Co. of America says it plans to run a natural gas pipeline into the eastern part of metropolitan St. Louis, Mo., adding competition for distribution utilities and encouraging development of gas-fired electric power plants.

NGPL, a subsidiary of Kinder Morgan Inc., said it has signed supply and storage contracts with Dynegy Marketing and Trade, a unit of Dynegy Inc. which recently acquired Illinois Power Co. Illinois Power serves portions of eastern metropolitan St. Louis with both electricity and gas.

NGPL will build a 47-mile pipeline from Centralia, Ill., to an interconnection with Illinois Power's St. Louis distribution system. When completed, the $35 million conduit will have a transportation capacity of 300,000 decatherms of gas per day.

Dynegy, under a 10-year agreement, has signed up for 90,000 decatherms per day and, according the NGPL, that's enough to go ahead on. Deb Macdonald, the company's president, said "With Dynegy as our anchor customer, we will build the new lateral into the St. Louis market regardless of whether we receive other expressions of interest."
